From architecture student to viral artist - all with vintage machines...

Hello friend!

Welcome to another day of Joy Hour, your 3x weekly dose of positivity and inspiration!

Today's story proves that extraordinary art can come from the most unexpected places - like a vintage typewriter! Let's explore how one artist is breathing new life into a technology many consider obsolete, creating masterpieces one keystroke at a time.

James Cook's story starts with a simple high school assignment gone unexpected. While researching artists who used technology, he discovered Paul Smith, an artist with cerebral palsy who created art using typewriters because he couldn't hold traditional art tools. This chance discovery completely changed Cook's path.

Fast forward to today, and Cook has created over 350 pieces using nothing but the 44 keys on vintage typewriters. His process is remarkably straightforward yet complex - he uses different characters and varying pressure to create shading and detail. Think of it like pixels in a digital image, but instead of dots, he's using @symbols, letters, and punctuation marks. His pieces range from standard paper size (taking about a week) to massive 3-by-4 foot cityscapes that take three months to complete.

What's particularly interesting is how his art has connected with people. He's received over 100 donated typewriters from families who had these machines sitting in attics and basements. Many still contain their original ribbons - which actually preserve the text of old documents typed decades ago. Cook often incorporates hidden messages in his artwork that relate to these typewriters' histories, adding an extra layer of meaning to each piece.

Despite starting as an architecture student, Cook took the leap to pursue typewriter art full-time after gaining attention during the pandemic. Now he creates everything from celebrity portraits to recreations of famous paintings, and even takes commissions to draw iconic buildings - a nod to his architectural background.
