The Fish Who Found a Friend 🐟
Meet Elvis, the Bass Who Proves Love Knows No Boundaries
Hello friend! ✨
Welcome to another day of Joy Hour, your 3x weekly dose of positivity and inspiration!
What if I told you that somewhere in Wisconsin, there's a fish who comes when called, recognizes his human friend, and has maintained this friendship for over two years? Meet Elvis, the smallmouth bass who's challenging everything we thought we knew about fish, friendship, and connection.
Before today's story: Need a festive wellness boost? Meet my holiday secret weapon: Pique's organic matcha. One cup equals 10 cups of green tea benefits (without the jitters!). Get 15% off your first order + free shipping. More below.
Today I'm sharing a story that might sound like a Disney movie, but it's absolutely real. Beneath the waves of a Wisconsin lake, an extraordinary friendship has blossomed between a diver named Rex Colubra and a wild smallmouth bass he named Elvis.
Their story began in 2021 when Rex was exploring a new diving spot. While other fish kept their distance, one curious bass stayed close, unafraid even when Rex surfaced. Something about this fish was different - maybe it was the distinctive scar on his face from an old fishing hook, or perhaps just his fearless personality.
"I was checking out a new spot and all these fish were coming up to me," Rex recalls of that first encounter. "I noticed one was sticking closer than the rest. He wasn't scared even when I got out. He stuck close to the surface in the shallows."
What happened next is simply beautiful. Rex started visiting Elvis regularly, bringing his favorite snack (crawfish!), and even developed a special "call" - three gulping sounds that tell Elvis his friend has arrived.
What Makes This Story Special:
Elvis recognizes Rex and follows him around the lake
Their friendship has lasted over two years
Rex transformed from an avid fisherman to a fish whisperer
Elvis responds to a special "call" from Rex
The Science Behind the Story: Here's something fascinating - scientists have discovered that fish aren't the forgetful creatures we once thought they were. Research shows they can:
Recognize human faces
Form long-term memories
Show intelligence and curiosity
Build relationships
"To me, the sea is a continual miracle; The fishes that swim, the rocks, the motion of the waves, the ships with men in them. What stranger miracles are there?" - Walt Whitman
