500,000 Floating Flowers
Rebecca Louise Law and her latest exhibition
Good Morning 🌞
Welcome to another issue of Joy Hour
I’ve got something absolutely magical to share with you today! Imagine walking into a library and being greeted by colorful curtains of flowers, seemingly floating in mid-air. This enchanting sight is what you’ll find at the Downtown Cleveland Public Library, thanks to the incredible work of British artist Rebecca Louise Law and her latest exhibition, "The Archive."
Cleveland Public Library Dazzles with 500,000 Floating Flowers
Rebecca Louise Law is famous for her stunning installations that transform spaces with strings of flowers. "The Archive" is her masterpiece, featuring 400,000 dried flowers from her past exhibits and an additional 100,000 blooms gathered from the heart of Northeast Ohio. This isn’t just an art display—it’s a labor of love involving hundreds of local volunteers who helped string these flowers onto copper wires.
Why This Exhibit is Special
Here’s what makes "The Archive" so captivating:
Community Effort: Hundreds of volunteers from Northeast Ohio came together to create this beautiful display, making it a true community project.
Recycled Beauty: Many of the flowers were saved from being discarded by funeral homes and grocery stores, giving them a second life in this stunning installation.
Artistic Brilliance: Rebecca Louise Law’s ability to weave natural materials into awe-inspiring art is nothing short of magical.
Behind the Scenes
The spark for bringing Rebecca Louise Law to Cleveland came from Erin Guido, the director of arts and special projects at LAND Studio. She’s had an artist crush on Law forever and knew her floral installations would be perfect for the library’s See Also series, an annual event that showcases new works by acclaimed artists.
Daily Wonders
For library staff like Tiffany Graham Charkosky, the director of arts and culture, the exhibit is a daily delight. “You see things, and you think, ‘How has that been here this whole time?’” she marvels, discovering new details in the display every day.
A Welcome Back
The library’s CEO and executive director, Felton Thomas Jr., is thrilled about the exhibit’s impact. During these post-pandemic times, bringing people back into the library is more important than ever. "The Archive" has not only drawn visitors but also sparked excitement on social media, making it a must-see attraction.
